Google is finally making it easier to access your account without using OTPs

Google realises that OTPs via phone numbers are less secure, so giving people another secure option for logins is much needed.

Google realises the need to secure all our accounts, for which it regularly informs people about protecting their data behind two-factor authentication. The company has now decided to foolproof the technology by offering another option for 2FA logins.

So, if you have a Google account and don’t want to rely on the mobile-based OTP logins, Google is now giving you the option to use third-party authenticator apps for this purpose. Using a phone number to authenticate accounts can be convenient but they can be prone to hijacks as well if you misplace or someone gets access to your phone number.

Google 2FA Login Changes: What We Know

Google is bringing a second layer of security that can be enabled using authenticator apps or even using the hardware security key which is far more complex than the former. With these authenticator apps, you get a one-time passkey in six digits that elapses after a few minutes and refreshes to give you another key.

Google is offering these changes for all its Google accounts, including the free personal users and the Workspace users. Google started giving its users the option to set up passkeys for accounts in 2023 and the company claims it now has over 400 million accounts using the advanced security tech for their account protection.

Google is going after advertisers who continue to promote apps that can generate nude images. The company has always followed a strict policy against these ads but from this month onwards, Google is ready to heavily penalise them by blocking the content and apps that promote these services. The changes are going to be applicable from the end of May after which ads of this nature will be directly removed from the Play Store.

Google has tweaked its content and app store policies in recent times and more efforts are required to tackle the modern issues. AI-generated images and content are spreading like a wildfire these days and companies like Apple and Google are trying their best to thwart the risk posed by altered content.
